Is booze in your preps?

I don't drink but I could stash away some for bartering. It would be worth more than gold I think.

What have you done and how much?

Vodka.
Oh, and vodka with a little vodka just to spice it up a bit.

I keep rotating my stock because it's highly perishable, right? "Buy what you drink, drink what you buy", after all.

Seriously, though, I don't really have "prep amounts" of booze at this point; just a very well stocked bar. But the other thing I have is the knowledge and equipment needed to turn any fruit juice into nice wine. And an apricot orchard and a bunch of cabernet and zinfandel vines. So with that I've checked the booze preps off my list and called it good. But I never pass up a good sale on liquor, either. Cheers! :coolbeer:

Plenty of booze here.

Great bartering item, but as others have stated, you must sample your stash to make sure it is still fresh.

As I don't drink hard liquor very much, I've got a nice stash of bottles I've gotten over the years as gifts. I've also bought a bunch of airline bottles as trading items.

We drink Cutty Sark scotch whiskey and Gordons gin in our household. In order to get the best bang for the buck, we purchase by the case and always reorder when we've used 2/3 of a case because we don't want to run out! So, at any given time, we might have as few as 4 1.75L bottles of booze, or as many as 16. That's about as much booze prepping I want to do. Any more might be dangerous to my health:signs1:

EDIT>>> So, back to the point I completely forgot to make. I fully subscribe to the "Buy what you drink and drink what you buy argument. If you want to buy some booze for barter, even though you don't drink, be my guest. But don't get carried away. There are far more effective ways to spend prep dollars. Buying booze when you don't drink is a whole lot like buying 50 pound bags of wheat berries when you don't bake bread, don't own a grain mill, don't cook from scratch and have no idea what to do with them other than barter.

Booze's value depends on how TSHTF. Moonshiners could distribute in your area killing your ROI for those just wanting a buzz. People on GIM often say that there will be significant demand for "the good stuff" but I disagree: if a sizeable market remains for that, the producers will continue to service that market (even if many factories/distilleries get destroyed, they will still have plenty of capacity to service the few people with a discerning pallete and the gold bricks to back it up).

Now in a black market urban situation it could certainly be profitable (much like drug dealing currently is). In that case, I'd recommend buying the cheap stuff (either by total volume or by alcohol volume).

No booze, not yet anyway. but I do have a few hops plants on the way here right now and in a couple weeks will order some demijohns and carboys for making the stuff.

I ordered a set of instructions from a company on Ebay that shows how to make Moonshine.

$8 plus parts from the local plumbing shop etc.

Still (pun intended) waiting. :5_1_120:

What Mel said, common commodities like booze, TP, soap will be available...just higher priced.
I'ved done the math for making moonshine and it's just about break
even considering supplies, fuel for the still and time, and of course the legal angle at this time.

Booze barter is OK for FTF trades with friends, I prefer 100 proof glass pints of vodka to "seal the deal" ....sometimes before the deal or sometimes after.

Anyone can make beer or wine - not anyone has gallons of grains etc. stored away.
My grandfather, when we went to our BO place would always toast our safe journey across the lake with a large whiskey. Then he would have to drink it all, to make sure "The stuff at the bottom survived the travel" :D
When he opened a bottle, the cork went in the fire - you gotta make sure you drink it all, according to what he taught me "Whiskey doesn't travel well"... :D

3 cases - one each Rum, Vodka, Whiskey/Scotch.....one additional case of mixed boozes....

Been on a Vodka/Gim & Tonic bender as of late.....having one right now....

Never have less than 3 cases of beer on hand.....

I think I need to stock something I can't tolerate drinking. All the Wild Turkey I stock ends up disappearing.

I also stock sake for cooking. It's an essential ingredient in Japanese cuisine.

We've stocked up about 250 lbs of barley for the brewing fine ales. Got one batch almost ready to sample. :cooler:

Same here. No still though. Wife forbade that plan. I do make wine, mead, and beer. I have enough to last me for a while.

Trade? No way! I'm keeping it for myself.

I think mead would be the easiest to do SHTF situation, due to where I am regionally. Grapes and grain will be harder for me to get but I can buy honey locally.

I keep a stock of various brand named stuff.

Brandy, Whiskey, Cognac, Gin, Vodka, Schnapps, Tequila, Rum, Bourbon, you name it. I've been gradually collecting all of the major (and a few minor) food groups.

Been thinking about getting some Absinthe but theres too much hype and not enough intelligence about making an informed choice in that arena.

Some German friends of mine dropped by the other night and informed me about a Whiskey distillery nearby that was producing 1 new barrel of Bourbon a day ...they had visited the place and sampled the wares. They said they liked the clear stuff before it was aged in oak barrels best (moonshine). Funny how foreigners can know more about what is going on than people in the area.

Looks like a good business idea.

Interesting. I wonder how the distilling process is going to work there in Texas. Aside from the water, the other reason there are a lot of bourbon distillers in Kentucky is the seasonal weather. The pores in the oak barrels open up in summer, allowing the bourbon to soak in, and when the pores in the wood contract in cold weather, it pushes the bourbon back out. It's the constant cycling through the wood that's supposed to give Kentucky bourbon its character. I'll keep my eyes open and try a bottle when it becomes available.

As for preps, I like beer and bourbon. Used to do gin martinis, but I've been gravitating toward bourbon in my old age. I like Evan Williams (green or black label) for mixing, and Elijah Craig for sipping. I also have some Bernheim wheat whiskey for sipping. (All are made under the Heaven Hill label, Bardstown, KY.) I think I have enough bourbon on hand to last a few years.

As for the beer, I used to brew my own with the prepackaged wort, but stopped when the kids came along. Need to start looking at that again....
